After filing the income tax return, the next step is to verify your ITR. Once it is verified, the tax department starts processing the return and under section 143(1), sends the taxpayer an intimation notice. While the tax department processes your return,it checks the taxpayer’s income details, TDS claimed and matches that with Form 26AS, etc.
The last date to file the income tax return for the financial year 2018- 19 was August 31, 2019. This intimation notice tells if the income computation mentioned by you in your ITR is matching with that of the tax department. It may be noted that the income tax department takes at least one month to process the ITR from the date of filing the return. As per the current income tax laws, the time limit to process the ITR is one year from the end of the financial year in which income tax return was filed. After the tax department processes your return, the department sends an intimation notice.
Once your ITR is filed and verified, the status of your return will be shown as ‘Return Submitted and Verified’. It may, however, be noted that in case if your ITR is not processed by the department even after a long period of time, you can raise a grievance of the same.
